Maths

Our whole school motto of ‘We Can Do Anything’ really applies in this subject

Practical maths is embedded at the heart of our maths teaching and can be seen throughout each pupil’s day at Herons Dale – from problem solving at snack time to maths games at play times, from provision in our freeflow indoor and outdoor environments to fluency sessions in formal classes.

All teachers have embarked on a journey to teach through practical hands-on sensory-led maths, leading to using Maths Mastery initiatives, and the impact of a renewed emphasis on using concrete (hands on) and pictorial (drawn out) representations alongside traditional abstract representations has been really visible in our pupils’ learning and understanding.

Whilst problem solving is embedded throughout the school year, we have three investigation and problem-solving weeks, which are linked to each of our whole school topic. This enables our children to apply those skills they have been working on in real life, meaningful manner. Our whole school motto of ‘We Can Do Anything’ really applies in this subject and it is fundamental that we build up that confidence in our learners that they really can ‘do’ maths!
